The Ertl Company was founded by Fred J. Ertl Sr. in 1945 in Iowa,
applying diecasting techniques he had learned in his homeland Germany to
manufacture licensed farm toys. The company (which is based today in Dyersville, Iowa
and owned by USI in New Jersey) soon grew and expanded. Diecast farm toys, trucks and
scale model cars are but some of the different assortments Ertl has. Literally thousands
of models have been produced, many in limited special issues which makes them very sought after
by collectors. It is easy to get lost in the jungle of literature covering Ertl's products, but
many good sources can still be found. A good source to keep up to date
on Ertl products and previews is Ertl's Replica newsletter.
The address for subscriptions is Ertl A/R Replica Subscriptions,
P.O. Box 500, Dyersville, IA 52040. U.S.A. (US--$12.00 for 1 year 6 issues) (Outside US--$16.00).
While Ertls were originally made in the U.S.A. they are now mostly manufactured in China.
